Getting out from you Comfort Zone is a phrase or concept you often run into when attending management and sales training sessions. This is also mentioned in several management books. What is it all about? Why should we do something that we are not used to do and do not necessarily feel comfortable about? Would it be better to keep on going through the same routines as we have always done?
The theory says, if we keep on doing things exactly the same way our skills or way of thinking is going down. I have attended several kick off meetings or conferences where good inspirational speakers tells us that we have a lot of untapped potential inside us. The human brain needs new challenges.
New challenges or daily routines?
When following people around there seems to be a lot of differences between the behavior. Some people are looking for new challenges all the time. On the other hand some people are very keen to keep their daily routines and does not like surprises in their life. Is one way better than the other? Probably this is not black and white. However, it seems that the people, who are looking for new challenges, gets also new initiatives at least started.
How to get out of your Comfort Zone?
Some of the changes can be small, like changing your typical route to work. You could also try a new shop when buying your daily food? The extreme one could be to start a totally new hobby. How about studying a new language? Have you thought of joining a choir or starting to play a new instrument? In business this could mean to reach out new buying centers. You could also decide to make your own campaign by trying to set up meetings with C-level clients and prospects. If you are not used to make presentations in front of a large audience, by starting to do so might mean really getting out of your Comfort Zone.
Inspiration from the camp
I am an average runner. Never run a marathon and no plans to do so. However this week I found myself in a barefoot training camp. This was very exciting. A group of 15 people whom I have never met before, but suddenly training very intensively together. Two experts from UK were teaching us the secrets of barefoot running. I thought I knew how to run. After a couple of hours I found out that I have been running in a totally wrong style. It was really interesting to get the knowledge and also a potential path, how to learn to run. We were training with such drills that we had to get out from our Comfort Zones. In the end we were able to start making some exercises, which I thought in the beginning would be impossible for me. Will I become a true barefoot runner? I don’t know, but I got a lot of inspiration from the camp.
I am keen on trying new things both in business and private life. I am a strong believer that this works for me in developing myself. I believe it could also work for you!
